From Farm Waste to Smart Energy

As part of the COPOWER project, Centria University of Applied Sciences is conducting a biogas plant pilot at Wennström Farm, showcasing how renewable energy and smart energy management can enhance energy efficiency and sustainability in agriculture.

The pilot integrates a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) unit with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) supplied by Heliostorage. Electricity generated from biogas produced from farm manure is used to power the farm, with excess energy stored in the battery and supplied when demand exceeds production.

A key feature of the pilot is the automation and optimization software that acts as a virtual power plant. The system monitors energy production and consumption, deciding when to charge or discharge the battery for maximum efficiency.

Fabian Sander from Centria explains, “This pilot demonstrates a full-circle approach: cows produce milk—and manure—which fuels the biogas plant, helping the farm use energy sustainably and efficiently.

The pilot represents an important step in exploring smart energy solutions for modern farming, paving the way for wider adoption of renewable energy technologies in agricultural settings.
