Icelandic partners developed an extensive training course for rangers, volunteers, local authorities, and the general public to bring new knowledge on habitat restoration and construction of upland paths or tourist sites. Apart of the theoretical knowledge, the participants worked directly in several sites, one of which was Eldhraun, a lava field covered with thick moss. The Environmental Ministry of Iceland has welcomed these courses and decided to adapt their structure and main focus, thus securing funding and making the legacy of ASCENT project having significant impact on national policy making in Iceland.
Guðrún LárusdóttirThe Agricultural University of Iceland
The University has worked with SCSI´s ASCENT team, and the Ministry for the Environment and Natural Resources, on developing and running short programs for locals around Iceland, on design and constructions at tourist sites, including footpaths. The focus has been on general footpath work, local material use, traditional crafts, and habitat restoration. The courses have been well attended and the collaboration with the Ministry ensures that the programs will remain available.
