About Veltek and Hátindur 60+

Veltek is a welfare and health technology cluster that connects public institutions, academia, businesses, and users to foster innovation in the field of welfare and healthcare services. The cluster promotes knowledge-sharing, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the development of sustainable people-centered technological solutions, that improve quality of life and increase the efficiency of health and social care. Hátindur 60+ is a local initiative based in Fjallabyggð, Iceland, focusing on improving the lives of older adults in rural and remote areas. The project aims to enhance social well-being, promote independent living, and develop new approaches to service delivery through innovation, collaboration, and user-centered design. It responds directly to the unique needs, challenges, and opportunities found in sparsely populated communities. Together, Veltek and Hátindur60+ represent complementary efforts to ensure accessible, equitable, and modern services for older adults, tailored to the realities of rural life in Iceland

Why Fjallabyggð, Northern Iceland?

In Fjallabyggð, Hanna Sigga Ásgeirsdóttir has been the project manager of Hátindur 60+ since 2023 and recently took on a new role as project manager at Veltek. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in leadership and management with a focus on Human Resource and Project Management. Veltek is a national cluster that brings together public organizations, academia, businesses, and users to foster innovation in welfare and health technology. Hátindur 60+ is designed to support older adults through innovative approaches to social services, welfare technology, and community engagement. The project is divided into several focus areas, including Social Projects, Welfare Technology, Service Development, and European and Nordic Collaborations. It addresses the unique challenges and opportunities faced by rural and remote communities, aiming to improve the quality of life for older adults by promoting social participation, independence, and access to tailored services.

“I believe individuals should receive the services they need on their own terms, with systems that adapt to their needs—not the other way around,” says Hanna Sigga Ásgeirsdóttir.

Through her work in Fjallabyggð , Hanna Sigga is committed to advancing inclusive, responsive, and sustainable service models that empower people and communities across Iceland.

How Veltek and Hátindur contributes to the NPA SelfCare Project

Veltek and Hátindur 60+ bring together local experience and national collaboration in welfare innovation. Hátindur 60+, based in Fjallabyggð, develops and tests solutions that support older adults in rural areas through social initiatives, welfare technology, and service development tailored to local needs. Veltek connects stakeholders across sectors to accelerate person-centered and tech-enabled care solutions. Together, they contribute tested models, practical tools, and deep insight into how self-care services can succeed in remote, culturally diverse areas—while benefiting from the NPA network to strengthen and scale their impact.

Why This Partnership Matters

This partnership gives Veltek and Hátindur 60+ access to valuable knowledge, networks, and tools for developing sustainable and culturally sensitive services in rural areas. At the same time, we contribute local experience in service innovation for older adults and a national platform for welfare technology development. Together with NPA partners, we help shape future solutions that work across borders but remain rooted in local needs.
