Building resilient supply chains in rural regions through open-source innovation

Smarter supply chains for rural SMEs - powered by open-source innovation.

Across the Northern Periphery and Arctic (NPA) region, SMEs face unique supply chain challenges — from long distances and limited infrastructure to reduced access to digital tools. The Arctic Edge project is tackling these challenges head-on by supporting SMEs to adopt practical, scalable digital solutions that improve efficiency, resilience, and visibility across their operations.

At the core of this approach is a shift towards accessible, open-source technologies. Rather than requiring costly, complex system overhauls, Arctic Edge promotes modular, low-code solutions that can integrate with existing systems such as ERP platforms. This enables SMEs to modernise their supply chains in a way that is both affordable and adaptable over time.

Technologies like MQTT and Node-RED play a key role in this transformation. Together, they support real-time data exchange between equipment, sensors, and business systems — allowing companies to move from manual processes to automated, data-driven decision-making. This aligns directly with Arctic Edge’s goal of developing cloud-based, IoT-enabled architectures that strengthen supply chain interoperability and responsiveness in rural manufacturing environments.

By enabling better data flow and system integration, SMEs can improve everything from inventory tracking to maintenance monitoring — all while building more resilient and transparent supply chains. Importantly, this approach also allows businesses to start small, test solutions, and scale gradually, reducing risk and accelerating digital adoption.

As Arctic Edge continues to pilot and refine these solutions across partner regions, it is helping to demonstrate how open, flexible technologies can deliver real impact for SMEs operating in some of Europe’s most remote areas.
