Northern lights, starry skies, light art… what does darkness mean to you?

Pimeän pilkahdus is a family-friendly market square event that brings light to the beginning of the dark season. On Saturday, October 18th from 3 PM to 7 PM at Joensuu Market Square, we’ll explore and celebrate darkness in its many forms. The event features a variety of North Karelian tourism companies, cultural actors, and science organizations. Come and discover the wonders of darkness through activities, workshops, and exhibitions!

Participants include Karelia-ammattikorkeakoulu, Itä-Suomen yliopiston LUMA-keskus, Pohjois-Karjalan elokuvayhdistys, and Botania. During the event, some partners will also host programs at their own venues.

Program Highlights (3 PM – 7 PM at the Market Square)

GLOW2.0 – Karelia-ammattikorkeakoulu
At the GLOW2.0 booth, you’ll learn what darkness means for the well-being of humans, animals, and plants. You’ll also get to know more about pimeän taivaan matkailu (Dark Sky Tourism).

Venejoen Mylly
At Venejoen Mylly, history and mystery come alive in the dark. This old watermill serves as a unique meeting place where stories of the past, dim lighting, and the sounds of nature intertwine into an unforgettable experience.

Venejoen Piilo
Stay and relax at Piilo! This wilderness retreat offers unique accommodation for hikers and holidaymakers in the heart of North Karelia. Built with respect for nature and tradition, the cabins rest by the Venejoki River amidst ancient forests. Enjoy the silence of nature and unwind in a gentle sauna. Workshop: Secret or Puzzle?

For curious minds of all ages
Are puzzles always what they seem? In this workshop, puzzles hide secrets that are revealed only under special conditions. Using UV light and darkness, hidden images emerge, challenging participants to solve puzzles in a whole new way — eyes alone won’t be enough; you’ll need curiosity and creativity too!

The workshop offers puzzles of varying difficulty, suitable for both children and adults. Come alone, with family, or with friends — and discover what secrets a puzzle can hold!
