Overcoming distance barriers

Long distances can make it difficult for young people in rural areas to access youth services and meet their peers. Featured as a good practice within INCLUDE, eNuokkari is addressing this challenge through a digital youth centre in North Karelia, Finland.

A safe online space for young people

Using Discord, a communication platform familiar to many young people, eNuokkari offers a moderated online space where participants can connect with peers, join activities and speak with youth workers, regardless of where they live. Developed with youth workers and supported by the InnoGS project, the initiative uses clear rules, dedicated channels and moderation to support safe participation.

Growing participation and regional reach

At the time of reporting, the platform had 101 members, including approximately 77 young people. Development is continuing, with plans to extend the service across Eastern Finland.

Lessons for other rural regions

The experience highlights the importance of active outreach, staff time and practical training to help youth workers build an engaged online community. For other rural regions, eNuokkari offers a model for using familiar digital tools to improve access to youth services and support social inclusion.
