The N-LITE project partnership has published the N-LITE Digital Innovation Toolkit, a practical guide designed to help tourism organisations, cultural institutions and SMEs develop immersive literary tourism experiences using digital and immersive technologies.

Developed as part of the Interreg Northern Periphery and Arctic (NPA) N-LITE – Literary Tourism Immersive Technology Acceleration project, the toolkit brings together insights and lessons from partners across Ireland, Finland, Sweden, Norway and the Faroe Islands. It provides a roadmap for organisations interested in combining storytelling, heritage and technology to create engaging visitor experiences that connect culture, place and innovation.

The guide explores how digital tools such as Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and location-based digital games can deepen visitor engagement and open new opportunities for cultural tourism businesses. These technologies allow stories to be layered onto real landscapes, enabling visitors to interact with characters, explore mythological worlds, and experience heritage sites in new ways.

Structured as a step-by-step resource, the toolkit walks readers through the full process of developing immersive tourism experiences, from early concept development and storytelling to technology selection, testing and launch. It also outlines key considerations for SMEs, including understanding target audiences, connecting experiences with the wider tourism ecosystem, and using visitor feedback and data to improve and expand digital products over time.

Alongside practical guidance, the publication highlights case studies developed through the N-LITE project, demonstrating how immersive storytelling can be applied in different cultural contexts. These include experiences inspired by Finnish folklore, Sámi heritage in Sweden, the literary works of Knut Hamsun in Norway, Faroese author William Heinesen, and Ireland’s mythological landscape at Rathcroghan in County Roscommon.

By showcasing these examples and outlining practical development processes, the toolkit aims to support tourism and cultural organisations across the Northern Periphery and Arctic region and beyond to explore new ways of bringing stories to life for visitors.

The N-LITE Digital Innovation Toolkit is now available to download from the project website.
