The first day of Ireland learning journey started in good weather.

After long travel from own countries, stakeholders and partners from Finland, Iceland, and Sweden arrived early morning in Dublin, hopped on the bus, and were transferred to Cavan County, where our Ireland partner from the Cuilcagh Lakelands Global Geopark awaited their arrival.

At around noon, participants arrived at Slieve Russell hotel where they enjoyed a warm lunch. Nestled in 300 acres stunning surrounds of Co Cavan, inclusive of 50 acres of lakes, this 4-star hotel offers a unique and luxurious experience in tranquility to its guests. The welcoming session at the Slieve Russell hotel was opened by Tony Walker, General Manager and Chair of Geopark Regenerative Tourism Business Network. There, participants got to learn about the destination, services, and the region’s Regenerative Tourism Business Network among other things.

In the afternoon, participants got a chance to visit the Cavan Adventure Centre. Established in 2008, this adventure centre offers numerous land and water-based experiences suitable for all ages. From team building activities, school tours, summer camps and specialised tours, their action packed adventure experience take place in one of Ireland’s most spectacular landscapes. This learning was further complemented by a short educational boat tour to Clough Oughter, a unique and magical heritage site in the area only accessible by boat. Conservation began on this site in 1987, with its beautiful structure protected under the National Monuments Act.

Thereafter, partners got acquainted with The Keeper Arms - a warm and welcoming traditional family-run accommodation with genuine Irish hospitality that is perfectly placed for exploring The Hidden Heartlands & Cuilcagh Lakelands UNESCO Geopark. Dinner was also provided at this site, a great way to sum up the first day of the learning journey!
