Day 2 Itinerary Highlights

On Tuesday, April 28, the REGENERATE Interreg project brought together partners and stakeholders from Finland, Iceland, and Sweden for an immersive learning journey in Ireland. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Cuilcagh Lakelands Global Geopark, the second day of the visit focused on experiencing sustainable tourism practices and community-led initiatives firsthand.

The day provided participants with a deep dive into the region’s natural heritage and innovative local businesses, showcasing how tourism and circular practices can support rural communities. The group departed from the Slieve Russell Hotel to begin their journey. Participants met with local rangers to walk the iconic "Stairway to Heaven," learning about habitat conservation, trail management, and mitigating the impact of footfall on fragile peatland ecosystems.

Led by guide Sean, the group explored the underground network of rivers and caverns, gaining insights into sustainable geotourism and the preservation of subterranean geological wonders. The group met with Rosemary for a warm, locally sourced lunch, learning about small-scale, community-oriented hospitality that supports the local food economy. A guided tour with Pauline offered a look into circular, sustainable production methods in local artisan manufacturing. The day concluded with a collaborative networking dinner, allowing partners and stakeholders to reflect on the day’s lessons and discuss future frameworks.
