BIO-2-PRINT Hybrid Training Session & Live Demonstration: Large-Scale 3D Printing and 3D Construction Printing Technologies

On 27 August 2026, the BIO-2-PRINT project hosted a Hybrid Training Session & Live Demonstration on Large-Scale 3D Printing and 3D Construction Printing Technologies at the Future Cast Innovation Centre in Manorhamilton, Co. Leitrim, Ireland, with online participation via Microsoft Teams.

The session introduced participants to the principles, technologies, materials and real-world applications of large-scale additive manufacturing, with a particular focus on sustainability, circular value chains and the use of underutilized natural resources in modern construction. A theoretical introduction covered the evolution of 3D construction printing, large-scale printing technologies and equipment, materials and sustainable manufacturing approaches. The printing covered process from planning to execution and was followed by a live demonstration of the full 3D construction printing workflow using a COBOD printer, with a dedicated Q&A.

The session was delivered by Mark McGowan, who has been involved in 3D construction printing since 2013 and leads 3D construction printing research and development at Future Cast, and Glen McStay, a certified COBOD operator. It was attended on-site and online by architects, engineers, researchers, construction and manufacturing professionals, and project partners from Ireland, Finland and Sweden.

This activity was delivered as part of BIO-2-PRINT's community engagement and knowledge transfer work (Work Package 1), an Interreg Northern Periphery and Arctic project focused on developing sustainable 3D printing materials and strengthening circular value chains through innovation, collaboration and stakeholder engagement.
