Building the Arctic right, together

The Northern Periphery and Arctic is growing. New ports, offshore wind farms, coastal roads, and bridges are being planned and built across the region. The knowledge to make this infrastructure durable, low-carbon, and resilient already exists. CATALIS brings it together and makes it available to the people who need it.

Good solutions exist

Two Interreg projects, Ar2CorD and OFFwind, spent years developing and testing solutions for some of the most demanding infrastructure conditions in Europe. Ar2CorD produced low-carbon concrete mixes with at least 30% less Portland cement that hold up against Arctic freeze-thaw cycles. OFFwind developed coatings that protect offshore wind structures against icing and corrosion in the Norwegian Sea and Gulf of Bothnia. Both projects generated valuable results across Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland. But research results do not automatically become practice. They need to be compared, explained, and transferred; adapted to different regional contexts, communicated to the engineers who specify materials, the authorities who plan and procure infrastructure, and the organizations advocating for greener construction. That is exactly what CATALIS does. Seven institutions from five countries are working together to synthesise these findings, demonstrate them at the Narvik field station, and build a lasting network that keeps the knowledge moving across the region long after the project ends.
