EU Arctic Policy Update – Have your say

What is the EU Arctic Policy?

The   EU Arctic Policy sets out the European Union’s engagement in the Arctic focusing on climate action, sustainable development, environmental protection and international cooperation. It aims to help ensure a safe, stable, sustainable, peaceful and prosperous Arctic, addressing the impacts of climate change and supporting local communities and Indigenous Peoples.

The current policy was adopted on 13 October 2021 in the Joint Communication “A stronger EU engagement for a peaceful, sustainable and prosperous Arctic”.

Why Update the Policy Now?

Since 2021, rapid changes in the Arctic (environmentally, socially and geopolitically) have continued to reshape the region. Climate change has accelerated sea-ice loss, permafrost thaw and new maritime routes, while global interest in Arctic resources and strategic positioning has grown significantly.

The update aims to ensure that the EU’s Arctic policy remains relevant and effective in addressing these evolving challenges and opportunities.

Why Interreg NPA voices matter

For people in the Interreg Northern Periphery and Arctic area, this consultation is especially important. The policy can influence EU programmes, cooperation frameworks and strategic actions that directly affect Arctic communities.

Your contribution helps ensure that local realities, needs, aspirations and knowledge are reflected in EU policy, so that decisions are informed by those who live and work in the Arctic.

How to Participate: practical details

The European Commission has opened both a public consultation and a call for evidence as part of the EU Arctic Policy update. The call for evidence is a background document that explains the Commission’s work and policy thinking, helping the public and stakeholders better understand the context and provide informed feedback as part of the consultation process.

  • Read the Call for Evidence (3 pages PDF)
  • Fill in the public consultation via the European Commission’s “Have Your Say” portal.
  • The consultation is open to everyone, including individuals, communities, organisations and businesses.
  • Contributions can be submitted in all official EU languages
  • Deadline for submissions: 16 March 2026
