Selfcare

Self Management of Health and Wellbeing in Rural Areas

SelfCare

SelfCare vision is to improve access to culturally sensitive and appropriate health and well-being self-management services in rural areas in the NPA region. The project will focus on the following 3 target groups: 1) Ukrainian refugees who have arrived in Ireland since the beginning of the conflict 2) SAMI population in remote and rural settings 3) Ageing population living independently in remote, rural and isolated Icelandic areas and need to travel to access healthcare services The common thread is one of marginalisation, disconnection, disempowerment and low levels of trust and understanding.

NPA SelfCare project kick-off in Limerick

Finally, the day came we all looked forward to in the project partnership – the in-person kick-off and launch of our NPA SelfCare project. The University of Limerick, School of Medicine, kindly hosted the event and ensured fantastic surroundings for our two-day project discussions, alignment and team building.

Our objective

SelfCare's goal is to improve self-care and self-management and create culturally appropriate and equitable access to the health and care system to create high levels of trust and familiarity.

Developing appropriate self-management opportunities in sparsely populated areas will have an economic and sustainable impact as it will be enabled by new and innovative technological solutions. It will address some of the mutual challenges these regions face with lack of physical professional presence in healthcare and care, emigration of young people, skewed demographics, lack of innovation, and a very sparse elderly population.

What are Culturally appropriate services?

Culturally appropriate service refers to the practice of delivering services, such as healthcare, education, social work, or any other form of assistance, respectfully and responsively, suitable to the cultural beliefs of the individuals and communities being served.

Culturally sensitive and appropriate services refers to services that are designed and implemented with a deep respect for different cultures and their values, beliefs, and customs. These services aim to ensure that individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds are treated with fairness, dignity, and respect, while also addressing their unique needs and preferences.

The right treatment, at the right time, in the right place.

The health and well-being of rural and remote communities is dependent on the ability to access culturally sensitive healthcare in a timely fashion, as close to the communities as possible. The right treatment, at the right time, in the right place.

This can be enabled by technology but must be anchored not only at the national level, ministries, and authorities but also with relevant local stakeholders including culturally sensitive target groups within the NPA region where such results have the greatest impact in terms of health and economics.
