On 20 October 2026, the European Commission and the EU High Representative presented a new strategy for the Arctic, setting out a renewed approach to cooperation in a region of growing geopolitical, environmental and economic importance.

Building on the EU's 2021 Arctic policy, the new strategy responds to increasing geopolitical competition, security concerns, accelerating climate change and emerging economic opportunities. It is structured around four priorities: Security, Climate, Economy and People.

A central message of the strategy is that the future of the Arctic must be shaped together with the people who live there. Local communities, regional authorities, young people and Indigenous Peoples are recognised as essential partners in developing a sustainable and resilient Arctic.

Interreg recognised as a key instrument for Arctic cooperation

The strategy mentions the role of the Interreg Northern Periphery and Arctic and Interreg Aurora programmes in supporting regional development and cooperation. It recognises these programmes as important instruments for fostering transnational and cross-border cooperation between Arctic and neighbouring regions.

The strategy notes that several hundred ongoing projects supported by the programmes address a wide range of shared challenges and opportunities, including climate resilience, innovation, service provision in remote regions, and the green and digital transitions.

The new EU Arctic Strategy provides an important framework for strengthening cooperation across the region. Its recognition of Interreg underlines the value of locally driven projects and partnerships in turning European policy ambitions into practical results.
